How to Maintain RAW & Virgin Hair

High-quality extensions such as raw and virgin hair are a true investment, and proper maintenance is what keeps them looking soft, natural, and long-lasting.

Unlike hair growing from your scalp, extension hair is no longer receiving natural oils and nutrients from the body. This means it must be intentionally cared for, moisturized, and maintained to preserve its softness, shine, and overall integrity.

Think of it like this — the hair is still real human hair, but it is no longer “self-sustaining.” Without proper care, it will naturally become dry or dull over time simply because it is not receiving the emollients it would normally get from the scalp.

With the right routine, however, raw and virgin hair can last beautifully and maintain its movement and quality.

Step 1: Washing (Every 2 Weeks or As Needed)

Raw and virgin hair should be washed approximately every two weeks, or as needed depending on product use and buildup.

When washing:

  • Always detangle the hair before shampooing

  • Use lukewarm water only

  • Gently cleanse using your fingers from roots to ends

  • Do not scrub the hair together — especially textured hair, as this can create tangling and unnecessary friction

When washing installed hair, it is very important to thoroughly cleanse the weft area to remove any product buildup, oil, or residue that may collect around the foundation.

This step is key in preventing odor, matting, and long-term buildup.

Step 2: Conditioning & Detangling

After shampooing:

  • Apply conditioner mid-shaft to ends only

  • Let it sit for 5–10 minutes

  • Rinse thoroughly

When detangling:

  • Use fingers or a wide-tooth comb

  • Always start from the ends and work upward

  • Hold the weft area to reduce tension

  • Be gentle and patient — never rush through knots

Proper detangling helps maintain the longevity and natural movement of the hair.

Step 3: Drying the Hair Properly

Drying is one of the most important steps in extension maintenance.

First:

  • Gently pat the hair with a towel to remove excess water

  • Do not rub the hair, as this can cause frizz and tangling

After removing excess moisture, you may choose one of the following methods:

  • Air dry

  • Blow dry on low to medium heat

  • Place under a hooded dryer

When wearing extensions that are installed, it is extremely important to ensure the foundation (your natural hair underneath) is also completely dry.

The fastest and most effective method is using a hooded dryer. If one is not available, a handheld blow dryer on medium heat and medium speed can be used. Carefully lift sections of the weft and dry underneath to ensure no moisture remains trapped at the base.

Failure to fully dry the weft and foundation can lead to:

  • odor

  • mildew buildup

  • matting

  • scalp irritation

Never sleep with wet hair extension as this can cause tangling/matting

Step 4: Heat Styling Care

Raw and virgin hair can be heat styled, but it should always be done with care.

  • Always use a heat protectant

  • Use moderate heat settings

  • Avoid excessive daily heat application

  • Focus on styling, not repeated over-processing

Healthy heat habits help preserve the longevity and softness of the hair.

Step 5: Nighttime Maintenance

Nighttime care plays a major role in keeping your extensions long-lasting and easy to manage.

Before bed:

  • Wrap hair in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet

  • Or place hair in a loose braid or low ponytail

  • Use a silk/satin pillowcase for added protection

You may also use soft flexi rods or rollers to twist the hair at night. This helps create curls and volume for an easy, styled look in the morning with minimal effort.

Step 6: Product Use & Moisture Balance

Less is more when it comes to maintaining extension hair.

You do not need to apply oils or serums daily.

Recommended use:

  • Light oils or serums 1–2 times per week

  • Lightweight leave-in conditioners as needed

  • Heat protectant before styling

Avoid heavy product buildup, especially near the weft area, as this can shorten the lifespan of the install.

Step 7: Maintenance Appointments

Even with proper at-home care, professional maintenance is still important depending on your install type.

This may include:

  • scalp and foundation cleansing

  • tightening or reinstalling tracks

  • trimming ends if needed

  • refreshing the style

Regular upkeep ensures the install remains clean, comfortable, and long-lasting.

Final Thoughts

Raw and virgin hair can last for a long time when treated with consistent, intentional care. With proper maintenance, your extensions can last 1–2+ years, depending on installati

on method, lifestyle, and how well the hair is cared for at home.

To preserve the longevity of the hair, regular maintenance should also include light trimming of the ends to remove any split or frayed pieces. This helps keep the hair looking full, healthy, and prevents unnecessary tangling over time.

It’s also important to understand that curl and coily textured extensions, just like natural hair, can be susceptible to heat damage. To minimize this, always use a thermal protectant before applying heat and avoid excessive or repeated flat ironing. Heat should be used intentionally for styling, not as a daily maintenance step.

With the right balance of care, protection, and maintenance, your extensions should remain soft, manageable, and beautiful long after installation.
